Lighter powers the perpetual futures in Robinhood Wallet and buys back and burns its token. LIT is up more than fourfold from its low, but unlocks arrive in December. What the project does, what moved the price, the levels to watch and the buy low, sell high grid.

The context: asymmetry

October 2026: the market is in full risk-off mode (US / Iran war in its eighth month, Brent above $100, US yields at 24-year highs, Bitcoin back toward $81,000). Yet some assets keep performing, carried by endogenous forces (volume, revenue, buybacks, adoption) stronger than exogenous forces (the macro picture, which hits everyone).

And Lighter? Lighter shows both sides of asymmetry. In July and August 2026, its integration into Robinhood Wallet and its token buybacks sent it up much faster than the market. But on 30 September, when Robinhood picked another partner for the United States, the same driver sent it down 17% in a day. An asset carried by a single story is exposed in both directions.

What Lighter does

Lighter (LIT), whose token launched in December 2025, is a perpetual futures exchange built on its own Ethereum layer 2, a "zk-rollup". Every order and every liquidation is mathematically proven and verifiable, and trading is free for retail users.

The protocol has handled more than $1,800B in cumulative volume, with about $60B over the last 30 days and $800M of open interest. Its revenue is used to buy back and burn LIT: 15.5M tokens have already been destroyed. Since July 2026, Lighter has been the engine of perpetual futures in Robinhood Wallet.

Who trusts it

  • Founders Fund: Peter Thiel's fund co-led the $68M round (November 2025, $1.5B valuation)
  • Ribbit Capital: fintech specialist fund, co-lead of the same round
  • Robinhood: investor, and Lighter has powered Robinhood Wallet's perpetual futures since July 2026
  • Haun Ventures: Katie Haun's crypto fund, in from the $21M round in 2024
  • Craft Ventures: co-led the 2024 round with Haun Ventures
  • Coinbase: LIT listing

What moved the price

A classic airdrop launch, then a turnaround driven by project-specific factors.

  • 30 December 2025, record at $7.86 at launch (endogenous): 25% of supply distributed to users of the points seasons. The first, very illiquid trades pushed the price up before profit-taking.
  • January to March 2026, $2.59 to $0.78 (−70%) (mixed): end of the points programmes, monthly volume down 83%, airdrop recipients selling in a risk-off market.
  • 1 July 2026, +20% in one day (endogenous): launch of Robinhood Chain, Lighter becomes the perpetual futures engine in Robinhood Wallet. The same day, the protocol burns the 15.5M LIT bought back (6.3% of circulating supply).
  • August and September 2026, $2.27 to $5.54 (mixed): daily buybacks, Robinhood at about 17% of daily volume, and the August crypto rally lifts volumes. Post-launch record on 24 September.
  • 30 September 2026, −17% in one day (endogenous): Robinhood picks Bitstamp for its perpetual futures in the United States.

Key figures, Lighter as of 11 October 2026

  • $3.58: current price
  • $7.86: launch record (30 December 2025), $5.54 excluding launch (24 September 2026)
  • −54%: discount from the launch record
  • About $900M: market cap, 250M LIT in circulation out of 1B
  • +359%: from the low ($0.78 on 31 March 2026)
  • 15.5M LIT: already bought back and burned

Our view

Strengths:

  • Unique distribution: direct access to Robinhood Wallet customers.
  • Buybacks and burns funded by platform revenue.
  • Top-tier investors: Founders Fund, Ribbit, Robinhood.
  • Verifiable technology on Ethereum, free for retail users.

Watch points:

  • Only 25% of supply in circulation: unlocks from December 2026.
  • Dependence on Robinhood, which chose Bitstamp for the United States.
  • Volume still far behind Hyperliquid.
  • Part of past volume was tied to the points programmes.

Levels to watch

  • $2.30: summer 2026 base
  • $4.50: top of the September zone
  • $5.54: post-launch record

Confidence index: 55%. A real endogenous driver, but concentrated on one partner and threatened by upcoming unlocks.

Buy low, sell high: where does LIT stand?

LIT is mid-range: already more than four times its low, but 35% below its September record. The $7.86 launch record is not a reliable reference: it formed in very illiquid trading.

  • Buy low: the $2.00 to $2.60 zone, the summer 2026 base before the August breakout.
  • Sell high: $4.50 to $5.54, where the price stalled in September.

The analysis verdict: mid-range. The December 2026 unlocks will add supply: a pullback to the buy zone after those unlocks would make more sense than an entry at $3.58.
